SAIDO Learning has been shown to positively impact the quality of life without the use of drugs for older adults suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. SAIDO Learning was developed by the Kumon Institute of Education (Kumon) of Osaka, Japan and has been in practice for more than 20 years.
Foulkeways trained and certified “Supporters” engage one to two older adults called “Learners” in a series of math, reading, and writing exercises. The 50-minute sessions are performed five times per week and are tailored to each person’s learning ability. The goal is not to teach rather it is to engage the Learner in repeated successful exercises progressing at the Learner’s own pace. This fosters confidence, abilities, and initiative to advance and try new things thus improving the quality of life for the resident. Through regular participation, Learners have shown increased energy, renewed social engagement and the satisfaction of recognizing what they can do versus what they cannot do in their lives outside of the session.
