1. On January 15, 1929, Martin was born Michael King Jr. His father, a pastor at a Baptist Church, inspired by the Protestant Reformation leader Martin Luther, changed both of their names.
2. At age 15, Martin Luther King Jr. enrolled at Morehouse College.
3. Martin became valedictorian of his class and graduated with a Ph.D. at age 25 from Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania.
4. Martin won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 at age 35.
5. He is the only person born in the United States whose birthday is a federal holiday. President Reagan signed a bill in 1983 naming a day of observance for Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday on the third Monday in January.
