Placing a pharmacist on-site is a strategic advantage for senior residential centers.  With many seniors taking 10 or more medications a day, pharmacists play a critical role in communicating drug information to residents.  Pharmacists can fill the information gap regarding OTC and Rx prescriptions/orders and remove the drug information burden from prescribers.

In communities like Foulkeways with independent and residential living options, the pharmacy is a valuable resource.  Medication options are discussed with residents and their prescribers and a plan is set in motion for treatment and monitoring.  In addition to understanding different treatment options, face-to-face interaction allows the pharmacist to build relationships with residents and staff.

The services offered by our pharmacy department are both “home” and “consumer” centered.  We allow residents to stay in their homes longer and in a safer manner by providing a medication box service for residents that require assistance with taking medications.  Our staff fills medication boxes for residents every week with pills set to the appropriate times.  We work with the Resident Care Nurse and our CRNPs to identify residents who could benefit from this service.  If any problems arise regarding compliance, we will also follow-up with the CRNPs.

Our medication box service has allowed many of our residents to remain compliant and enjoy the freedoms associated with independent living while ensuring they take the medications they need.  As a consumer-centered service, our pharmacy department is proactive in verifying residents are receiving value for their money.  Our pharmacists commonly call our prescribers to discuss financially responsible and clinically effective alternative medications.
