Flag Day 2024 commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.
Did you know that colonists did not fight united under a single flag, during the American Revolution? The Second Continental Congress met to create the Continental Army to unify the troops and organize the battle against the British. A flag with Continental Colors was developed as a new symbol of freedom to unite the country.
On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day.
