Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.
Did you know that during the American Revolution colonists did not fight united under a single flag? The Second Continental Congress met to create the Continental Army to unify the troops and organize the battle against the British. This led to the development of a flag with Continental Colors that would be a new symbol of freedom to unite the country.
On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day.
